We have had a lot of people ask questions about Easton's surgery coming up and what was going to be happening. I thought I would give a quick run-down to bring you all up-to-speed!
We will be having a family fast on December 2nd and would like to invite anyone who would like to, to participate in the fast with us.
On Monday, December 3rd, we check into the Shriner's Hospital at 1:00p.m. Easton will get x-rays, tests, and anything else that he needs to prepare for surgery. We spend the night at the hospital.
First thing Tuesday morning, December 4th, Easton will be taken in for surgery. We don't know what time it will be, but they start with the youngest first, so we think it will be pretty early. From what we understand the surgery is only supposed to last a couple of hours.
We think he will be released on Thursday or Friday of that week... depending on how quickly his body adapts to the pain medicine and such.
He will have to wear a cast for about a month, then once the stump is completely healed (they say 2-3 months) he can be fitted for his first prosthesis. So hopefully, he will have it by his 1st birthday so that when he is ready he can just start walking!
As for the surgery itself....
Easton will be having a symes amputation. (You can search the definition on google for a more complete description....note.... some of the pictures are a little graphic)
Basically, what they will do is remove the foot. Then they will take the heel pad and wrap it up and around the stump. He should be able to bear weight on it, which should make things a little easier, for example... in the middle of the night if he has to get up for something he wouldn't have to put his foot on to walk.
That is a very short explanation, but we are happy to explain or answer any other questions anyone might have. Thank you so much for all of your love and support......
And a BIG thank you to the SHRINER's Hospital, or the Free Masons for blessing our family in a way that is.... well.... incredible~!
